Last night I went to the movie theater here in Ahemedabad and saw a movie completely in Hindi.
There was a lot of Hindi, a lot of random dancing and singing, and a lot of great cinematography. Shockingly, I really enjoyed the movie although I could only understand a few words I’ve learned since being here.
Here are 4 things you’ll find different than what a normal movie in America is like.
- The flag of India is played on the screen while everyone stands and sings the national anthem
- The seats are numbered and you sit in your assigned seat
- There is an intermission
- They serve french fries at the concession stand
I love all of these differences between American and Indian movie theaters. It was an amazing experience and I highly recommend going to a movie in a country where there is going to be absolutely no English.

dude thats awesome! wouldve never known that about indi culture
Cool…but you should come to Utah =]
We have a chain of theatres here with assigned seating..it’s awesome! you can pick your seat online and show up right before the movie and not have to worry about finding a seat. And they serve french fries (as well as ice cream, pizzas, burgers, etc.)
Also, go to a movie on a US military installation. They show the flag on screen, you rise and sing national anthem, and if in uniform, you salute the flag. quiet emotional as a veteran =]
Dawson –
I’m loving your posts and your pictures. They really are amazing. I hope they’re just a drop in the bucket compared to the adventure you’re on. Thanks for sharing.
